February 2017 Accomplishments and Happenings
February was a month riddled with surprises for me. By the middle of the month, I loosened the grip on my personal plans because circumstances began to do their own thing. One of my friends told me once, “When we make plans, God laughs.” I guess God was guffawing with me for 28 days with a blend of cutesy and dark humor. Here is a brief overview of the happenings during this whimsical month and the things I accomplished. I Was in a Theatrical Narrative The theatrical narrativ

The Lessons I Learned from Children, Adults and a Successful Before and After School Program
For approximately 13 years, I have worked with children on and off. I am not an educator but my experience with youth is a mixture of after-school programs, before-school programs, tutoring and summer camps. The more involved I have become in assisting young people with writing and art, the more heroic teachers become to me. To me, teachers and superheroes are synonyms. They are like a blend of mythical gods who have the right balance of compassion and power to keep a classro

Book Review: The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success by Deepak Chopra
The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success by Deepak Chopra is a small book compacted with a treasure trove of consciousness. Chopra simplifies ancient concepts and uses these teachings as a guide to become spiritually wealthy. I found myself returning to certain chapters to have a better understanding of the book’s message. Though this book was short, I did my best to read it at a slower pace in order to absorb the lessons into my mind. If I needed to be more dedicated to a certain

The week began with a storyteller

January 2017 Accomplishments and Happenings
THE BEGINNING - Take Care of My Body January 2017 started out with both a bang and a fizzle. I celebrated the New Year sick in bed. I was in bed for days and though I was too weak to be excessively angry about it, I was still aggravated. I wanted to work on my goals but I also did not have the energy to walk. Thanks to Vitamin C and a list of demands to God, I got well and learned my first lesson of the year: take care of your health. I thought that I was physically fit. I th

Tales from the Bitter Crop: a documentary and theatrical narrative about lynching in the United Stat
Last year, I was one of two historians in the documentary "Strange Fruit" which tells of the history of the lynching of people of Afrikan descent in the United States. It is a film created by Kutnupproductions, founded by Eric and Sherre Ward. It was a wonderful experience for me to share my passion about a sensitive subject matter. The documentary not only informed but moved people who had a greater understanding about lynching after viewing. I was recently asked to be an ac

Return to Creation
Creation is often viewed as a process that takes place with ease, order and perfection. It is like a spotless room where creation can allow itself to unfold without the mess. Perhaps this is the brighter side of it, the part that we are all comfortable with. But such a viewpoint is not the full face of creation. Sometimes, there is a something or a someone who is ripped away from our lives. There is a smashing and a crashing of emotions or a period where our trials seem to ha
