Indifference

Many people consider hatred to be one of the two ultimate forms of human emotion, besides love. However, from my observation, there is a state of being that is far more complex than hatred could ever be. This state of being is indifference.

Indifference in certain situations can be positive depending on the situation. We can be indifferent to frivolous matters and refuse to give our energy to them. It helps us to concentrate on the experiences and aspects of life that we believe require our attention. Yes, sometimes this is necessary so that we will not feel as if we are being pulled in multiple directions. It prevents mental and spiritual overload.

However, there are certain times when indifference is a complacent poison. Interestingly, enough, when this occurs, other human beings are the factor. Day to day, while someone is giving love to another, there is someone being indifferent to another. We pass them on the streets begging or watch their struggles from a safe distance. We do not want to become involved we say or to get our hands dirty. In a sense, we justify this and wash our hands of it with reasons such as:

"I can't help anyone. I have to help myself first."

"I don't have the money or the time."

"I donate to charity."

"I don't want to become involved, I have a family to think about."

"It's a dog eat dog world."

"I have to think about my career."

"I will say a prayer for them."

In specific cases, these reasons are logical and sound. But what about the instances where anyone can make a difference, but everyone decides not to. How can we turn our heads when someone is being physically and verbally attacked? Why do we wait for one person to defend the victim when there are so many potential angels around who have mouths to speak and the power of numbers to protect? Are we animalistic or are we enlightened human beings?

It truly takes one to make the world a safer and better place for all people. It takes each of us on an individual basis to decide to do good and bring no harm to others, no matter what their differences. Uncalled for attacks both verbal and physical have more of a chance of happening because society has created the bed of indifference for it to fester end. If you hear or see any form of indifference or hatred call it out. The reason that you call it out is because both entities are so blinded by their own poisonous nature that their spiritual vision is myopic. "First, remove the beam out of your own eye and then you can see clearly to remove the speck out of your brother's eye." Call yourself out on any indifference that you have and decide to make the earth a peaceful place. This simple act of discipline creates a volume of difference.
